My insides were numb ever since the news broke out last night about the shooting that occurred in one of the casinos in Las Vegas. The Royal Tulip belonged to the Sokolov gang and the mention of the name immediately had me switching on news channels and checking news site updates every half an hour.
According to initial reports, a small army of gunmen entered The Royal Tulip and opened fire on the tourists, staff, and guards, causing mass chaos, both inside the casino and the street outside. More than sixty people were confirmed to be dead while more than a hundred were fatally injured.
None of the reports gave out the names of the victims. Even the police departments in Las Vegas didnât have the confirmed list yet. I couldnât bear not knowing whether Danicaâs name was on the list of the dead.
Our sources spotted her entering the airport yesterday afternoon in the company of the Sokolov cousins. The party was heading to Las Vegas in a private jet.
There was only one worthwhile destination in Vegas for the Sokolov cousins to bother visiting- The Royal Tulip, the casino that brought the family millions every year. Danica was always tailing Victor to his meetings, so it was more than possible for her to be present during the shooting.
My email folder was loaded with unopened emails but I couldnât bring myself to check any of them when my whole focus was on thinking up search terms to look for new sites with information on the shooting in Vegas.
I was doubtful whether a piece of news ever affected me this way. This event was close to changing my world. I was being driven crazy but it was impossible to stop searching for more information.
âShit! I need some space from this fucking laptop,â I muttered to myself and stepped away from my desk to go into the break room.
A couple of officers were chatting in low voices, enjoying a box of donuts between themselves. They called me to join them but I couldnât bring myself to do it.
âCarry on, guys. Iâm just here for a cup of joe,â I said and reached for the flask of freshly brewed coffee on the counter.
These officers werenât in the Sokolov clan investigation team. They would never understand the turmoil tearing me apart from the inside.
I watched them for a while but soon, my gaze shifted to the TV mounted high on a bracket in the wall. The news of yesterdayâs shooting was on it with the camera showing the devastation the gunmen left behind them.
âLooks like someone rained down bullets on the casino,â one of the officers muttered to his colleague.
âIâll bet not many escaped that assault,â said the second guy. âIf thatâs what happened to the furniture and jackpot machines, imagine what damage a human body sustained.â
My eyes followed the words scrolling along the red tape at the bottom of the screen. There was nothing new there but I still couldnât look away.
A few witness interviews started playing.
